The idea to create Enough came out of some conversations that started in July on my livejournal cruciferous and continued and continued and continued and continued and continued. It turns out people have a lot to say about this stuff, and that inspired us to dedicate this space to it. We hope you find it helpful.
I’m in NYC this week and every window is decorated with “green” themes. Any product, apparently, can now be advertised with an appeal to environmentalism. The USA Network recently added the tagline “environmentalists welcome.” I rode a Delta airplane and they featured a new green logo. It is a totally effective meaningless branding that helps us all forget that a better way to save the environment is probably to stop buying things. With that in mind, I hope the conversation here will bring us closer to effective conversations about personal nonconsumerist and redistributionist actions that don’t take up the false promise of individual choice and volunteerism being promoted by this green consumerism, but instead remind us of the constant connections between our personal practices and the poverty faced by most people in the world.
I’m also excited about Enough because I am getting ready to teach Poverty Law for the first time this fall and I’ve been thinking a lot about what such a class should entail. I’ll post my ideas for a syllabus as they emerge.
